  • Senior Dog Grooming: What to Change as Your Dog Ages

Senior Dog Grooming: What to Change as Your Dog Ages

Recognising when your dog is “Senior”

As our beloved dogs age, their grooming needs evolve. Senior dogs require a gentler touch, special tools, and a deeper awareness of their changing bodies. Grooming becomes more than just a beauty routine, it’s a form of health monitoring, comfort care, and quality time.

In this guide, we’ll explore how to groom your senior dog with confidence, compassion, and care.

    Dog grooming Courses Absolutely Animals

When is a dog considered senior?

    The aging timeline varies:

    • Small breeds: 10–12 years
    • Medium breeds: 8–10 years
    • Large breeds: 6–8 years

But more important than the number is noticing signs of aging like:

    • Slower movement or stiffness
    • Graying fur around the face
    • Skin thinning or sensitivity
    • Changes in coat texture

Why grooming needs change with age

    Senior dogs often face:

    • Dry or sensitive skin that requires gentler products
    • Joint pain or arthritis making standing difficult
    • Thinning coats or patchy fur growth
    • More frequent skin issues, lumps, or infections

Grooming routines must adjust to keep them safe and comfortable.

    [products columns=”4″ orderby=”title” order=”ASC” ids=”2861, 4888, 3501, 4110″]

    Gentle handling techniques

Grooming should feel safe and calming for your senior dog. Use:

    • Non-slip mats to reduce falls
    • Support under the belly for standing dogs
    • Frequent breaks if grooming is tiring
    • A calm voice and slow movements to reduce stress

For arthritic dogs, consider grooming while they lie down or on an orthopedic surface.

    Tools that are senior-friendly

Swap your regular grooming gear for:

    • Soft-bristle or rubber brushes for delicate skin
    • Low-vibration clippers to avoid startling your dog
    • Ergonomic handles for less hand strain (helps you too!)
    • Lukewarm air dryers instead of high-velocity blowers

Tip: Keep tools within reach to avoid leaving your dog unattended.

    Bathing tips for older dogs

Senior dogs often need less frequent bathing, unless they have incontinence or skin conditions.

    • Use lukewarm water
    • Choose fragrance-free, sensitive-skin shampoos
    • Avoid slippery tubs; consider a walk-in bath or handheld sprayer
    • Dry them thoroughly to prevent chills or hot spots

    Nail, Ear, and Eye Care

    Nails:

Older dogs move less, so nails grow longer and faster
Trim often to prevent posture problems or pain

    Ears:

Check for odor, redness, or wax buildup
Use a vet-approved ear cleaner and soft cotton pads

    Eyes:

Gently wipe away discharge with a warm, damp cloth
Watch for cloudiness, tearing, or squinting

    Dental care for seniors

Dental issues are common in senior dogs and can affect grooming comfort.

    • Use soft-bristle toothbrushes or Cleany Teeth Brushes
    • Try dental wipes if brushing is too invasive
    • Watch for signs of oral pain like pawing at the mouth or bad breath

    Grooming as a Health Check

Grooming time is the perfect opportunity to observe changes in your dog’s health:

    • New lumps or skin changes
    • Weight loss or gain
    • Signs of pain, lethargy, or discomfort

Note anything unusual and speak with your vet. Groomers often play a key role in early detection of health issues.

Final thoughts: Grooming with Love and Patience

Grooming your senior dog isn’t just about looks, it’s about comfort, dignity, and bonding. These sessions become more than routine; they’re a way to say, “I see you, I care for you, and I’m here for you.”

Make grooming a gentle ritual filled with calm energy and positive reinforcement. Your dog may be slowing down, but their need for care and love remains as strong as ever.

    HISTORY OF CRUFTS

Crufts is one of the largest dog events in the world. No longer purely a dog
show, Crufts celebrates every aspect of the role that dogs play in our lives.
It has changed in ways that couldn’t possibly have been imagined when the
show was set up in Victorian times by the late Charles Cruft. Although it was a
very different event in 1891, Charles Cruft was a great showman and would
surely have enjoyed the size and scope of the event today, which is an
essential date in any dog lover’s calendar.
Crufts is ultimately a celebration of all dogs. It celebrates working dogs, which
are fit and healthy enough to perform the jobs for which they were originally
bred, such as those in the Gamekeepers classes and those participating in
displays including the West Midlands Police Dogs. The show hails hero dogs
through The Kennel Club Hero Dog Award, and crossbreeds are honoured
through the final of the Scruffts Family Crossbreed of the Year competition.
Rescue dogs are celebrated in the rescue dog agility competitions and the
speed and agility of dogs is clearly seen in ever popular competitions
including flyball and heelwork to music.
For prospective dog owners and dog lovers, Crufts is a prime opportunity to
speak to breed experts about how to responsibly buy, rescue, train and enjoy
life with your dog. The Discover Dogs booths offer a chance for potential
owners and dog fans to encounter hundreds of different breeds of dog,
including some they may have never heard of before!
And of course, with hundreds of trade stands selling anything and everything
for dogs and their humans, it is also a four-day shopping extravaganza.

  • Is It Scary to Groom a Difficult Dog?

Is It Scary to Groom a Difficult Dog?

Grooming a difficult or anxious dog can feel like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. At Absolutely Animals Ltd, we specialise in turning grooming sessions into positive, stress-free experiences for even the most nervous pets. Whether it’s a dog with past trauma, severe anxiety, or simply a strong-willed personality, our expert groomers know how to create a calm and supportive environment that transforms fear into trust.

    Dog barking

    Understanding the Causes of Anxiety

    • Health Issues: Some dogs may have underlying health problems that cause discomfort during grooming.
    • Past Experiences: Previous rough handling or traumatic experiences can contribute to a dog’s fear of grooming.
    • Sensitivity: Sensitivity to grooming tools or loud noises can make the process stressful for some dogs.

    Building a Positive Relationship

    • Getting to Know the Dog: Spending time to understand the dog’s concerns and preferences.
    • Creating a Safe Environment: Ensuring the grooming area is calm and supportive to reduce anxiety.
    • Using Treats and Rewards: Reinforcing positive behavior with treats and gentle handling.

    Techniques for Handling Difficult Dogs

    • Handling Aids: Using muzzles or other aids to ensure the safety of the groomer and the dog.
    • Light Sedation: In some cases, light sedation may be recommended to relax the dog.
    • Expert Methods: Employing professional techniques to manage aggressive or anxious behavior.

So, is it scary to Groom a Difficult Dog?

The question of whether it is difficult to groom an anxious dog is going to change depending on the groomer that has been asked and their level of expertise.

Nothing is tougher to groom than a worried or anxious dog since their behaviour becomes less predictable and because dogs are live animals and do have free will to think and react on their own emotions.

You would be surprised to learn how many dogs are afraid of or uncomfortable during grooming. The causes can vary, but our groomers always try to build a positive relationship with the troubled dog and learn what their concerns are and what they might not like about the grooming process so we can change it.

In cases where a dog is fearful or hostile, light sedation may be advised in order to relax them and make the situation easier for them. But most of the time, we handle these pets by employing expert methods to produce a quiet and supportive groom.

Please make sure to let us know before booking in any aggressive or short tempered pets.

Common Challenges in Grooming Anxious Dogs

Grooming anxious dogs can be challenging due to their unpredictable behavior and fear-based reactions. Common issues include sensitivity to grooming tools, separation anxiety, and discomfort from previous rough handling. Addressing these challenges requires patience, expertise, and a calm environment.

Tips for Building Trust with Nervous Dogs

Building trust with nervous dogs is essential for a successful grooming experience. We start by creating a positive and safe atmosphere. Spend time getting to know the dog and using gentle handling techniques. Consistency and patience are key to gaining their trust.

    The Importance of Owner Involvement

Owners play a crucial role in the grooming process, especially for anxious or aggressive dogs. Their presence can provide comfort and reassurance to their pets. Communicating openly with the groomer about the dog’s behaviour, health issues, and preferences helps in developing a customized grooming plan.

    Health Issues That Affect Grooming

Certain health issues can influence a dog’s behavior during grooming. Conditions such as skin allergies, joint pain, or ear infections can cause discomfort and anxiety. Identifying and addressing these health concerns can lead to a more positive grooming experience for the dog.

    Creating a Calm Grooming Environment

A calm grooming environment is essential for handling difficult dogs. This can include playing soothing music, using calming sprays, and ensuring the grooming area is free of loud noises and distractions. A relaxed atmosphere helps reduce the dog’s anxiety and stress levels.

Our 16:00pm dog grooming club is for nervous and aggressive dogs. The kind of dog that may refuse to be groomed by owners or other pet grooming salons and needs an experienced groomer.

There are many reasons why dogs are nervous or aggressive. Some of these reasons are health issues, anxiety, separation anxieties, breeding related issues, previous rough handling or discomfort from tools, sensitivity to sound from tools or equipment utilised, and underlying pain issues that haven’t been diagnosed.

We always like to work with the owner for a better understanding and outcome as they may not always get the haircut they want. Some haircuts are not suitable for some dogs. Some dogs are better with the owner present and some are better without. We try to work around these challenges to find a solution for you and your pet.

The Absolutely Animals team are experienced groomers and if they are nervous of a difficult dog they hide it well. The team will use handling aids to avoid being bitten but sometimes dogs will need to come into the salon already muzzled for the safety of the groomer.

You must notify the team if your dog has any medical or health issues so we can prepare a plan to suit your dog.

  • The difference between a full groom and a bath and brush service

The difference between a full groom and a bath and brush service

Understanding the Difference: Full Groom vs. Bath and Brush Service for Your Beloved Dog

As a responsible pet owner, you want the best for your dog, including proper grooming to keep them looking and feeling their best. When it comes to grooming services, you may have come across terms like “full groom” and “bath and brush service.” While both options serve the purpose of maintaining your dog’s hygiene, there are key differences between the two. Let’s dive deeper into the disparity between a full groom and a bath and brush service to help you make an informed decision for your pet.

Full Groom: A Comprehensive Grooming Experience

A full groom is a comprehensive grooming service that covers all aspects of your dog’s coat and overall grooming needs. It involves a range of services to ensure your dog looks and feels their absolute best. Here’s what you can expect from a full groom:

    1. Coat Maintenance: The groomer will thoroughly shampoo and condition your dog’s coat, ensuring it is clean and healthy. This process may involve multiple washes to remove dirt, debris, and any unpleasant odors.
    2. Blow-Drying and Brushing: After the bath, your dog will be blow-dried to remove excess moisture from their coat. This step helps prevent matting and ensures their fur is fluffy and well-groomed. The groomer will also perform a meticulous brushing session, removing any tangles or knots that may have formed.
    3. Trimming and Styling: If your dog’s coat requires trimming or styling, a full groom covers these services. The groomer will skillfully trim the fur to achieve the desired length or style, giving your dog a polished and well-maintained appearance.
    4. Nail Trimming: Keeping your dog’s nails at an appropriate length is essential for their comfort and health. During a full groom, the groomer will trim your dog’s nails to a safe and manageable length, reducing the risk of overgrowth or discomfort.
    5. Ear Cleaning: Ear hygiene is crucial to prevent infections and discomfort for your furry friend. As part of the full groom, the groomer will clean your dog’s ears, removing any wax or debris and ensuring they are clean and healthy.
    6. Anal Gland Expression: Some dogs may require anal gland expression, a procedure performed by the groomer to relieve discomfort or prevent potential issues related to anal gland impaction. We do not perform this procedure at Absolutely Animals.

A full groom is highly recommended for dogs with long or thick coats that require regular maintenance. It offers a comprehensive and personalised grooming experience to keep your dog’s coat healthy, stylish, and free from any discomfort.

Bath and Brush Service: Simplicity and Refreshment

The bath and brush service, as the name suggests, focuses on refreshing your dog’s coat and maintaining basic hygiene. Here’s what you can expect from a bath and brush service:

    1. Shampooing and Conditioning: The groomer will give your dog a thorough bath using appropriate shampoos and conditioners to clean and revitalize their coat.
    2. Blow-Drying and Brushing: After the bath, your dog will be blow-dried to remove excess moisture, followed by a gentle brushing session to ensure their coat is free from tangles and debris.

A bath and brush service is suitable for dogs with short or smooth coats that do not require extensive maintenance or trimming. It provides a simple yet effective cleaning and grooming session to keep your dog looking and feeling fresh.

Choosing the Right Service for Your Dog

When deciding between a full groom and a bath and brush service, consider the specific needs of your dog’s coat and the level of maintenance required. If your dog has a long or thick coat that necessitates regular trimming and styling, a full groom is the ideal choice. On the other hand, if your dog has a short or smooth coat that mainly requires refreshing and basic upkeep, a bath and brush service will suffice.

It’s worth noting that some grooming salons may offer additional services or variations within these categories, so it’s always a good idea to communicate your dog’s specific needs and expectations with the groomer.

In conclusion, grooming plays a vital role in your dog’s overall well-being. Whether you opt for a full groom or a bath and brush service, both options contribute to maintaining your dog’s hygiene and appearance. Assess your dog’s coat type and grooming requirements, and consult with a professional groomer to determine the best grooming service to keep your beloved pet looking their best. Your dog will appreciate the care and attention they receive, and you’ll be rewarded with a happy and well-groomed companion.

  • How often should your dog get groomed?

How often should your dog get groomed?

Living in busy London, pet owners often find themselves caught up in the fast-paced city life. While they excel in providing essential care like feeding, exercise, and playtime, grooming routines for their beloved dogs often get neglected. However, grooming is crucial for maintaining your dog’s health, appearance, and hygiene. At our grooming salon located in Lee, London, UK, we understand the challenges faced by busy pet parents. That’s why we’re here to provide you with the answers you seek regarding grooming frequencies for your furry companions!

Although grooming requirements can vary among different dog breeds, a general guideline recommended by experts is to groom most breeds once a month. This regular grooming routine helps prevent matting and knots, which, if left untreated, can lead to skin irritation and infections. Grooming is a preventive measure that should never be overlooked.

Tailoring Grooming to Your Dog’s Breed

    Short-Coated Dogs

Examples: Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Whippet, Beagle, Boxer.

Short-haired dogs typically require occasional baths every 4-6 weeks and minimal brushing. Despite their short hair, they still shed, and some may even shed more than long-haired breeds. While shedding cannot be eliminated entirely, deshedding treatments are available to significantly reduce it. Here’s a recommended grooming plan for short-coated dogs:

    • Bathing: Once every 2-3 months
    • Brushing: Minimal brushing as needed
    • Grooming with clippers or trimmers: Rarely necessar

    Double-Coated Dogs

Examples: Golden Retriever, Border Collie, Shetland Sheepdog, Cocker Spaniel, English Springer Spaniel.

Double-coated dog breeds possess a dense undercoat that sheds seasonally, resulting in heavy shedding periods. Without proper grooming, their undercoat can become tangled and lead to matting. Regular brushing is essential for maintaining their coats. Here are the recommended grooming frequencies for double-coated dogs:

    • Brushing: 1-3 times a week
    • Bathing and trimming: Shorter, denser coats, once every 2-3 months; longer, less dense coats, once a month with a light trim every 3 months
    • Avoid shaving the coat: The undercoat helps regulate their body temperature

    Curly and Wavy Coated Dogs

Examples: Poodle, Bichon Frise, Irish Water Spaniel, English Setter, Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier.

Breeds with curly or wavy coats shed less but are more prone to matting. Regular grooming, bathing, and brushing are crucial to prevent matting and maintain their distinctive coats. Here’s the recommended grooming schedule for these dogs:

    • Brushing: At least 3 times a week, using a slicker brush to brush from the skin outwards
    • Bathing and grooming: Once a month; consider professional groomer visits at least once a month for proper coat maintenance

    Wire-Coated Dogs

Examples: Wire Fox Terrier, Border Terrier, Irish Terrier, Welsh Terrier, Cairn Terrier.

Terrier breeds with wire coats require specific attention to prevent matting close to the skin. Regular brushing and combing, starting from the skin and working outwards, are necessary. Consider the following grooming recommendations:

    Conclusion

Living in London, we understand the challenges faced by pet parents in maintaining a consistent grooming routine for their dogs. However, grooming is vital for their health and well-being. By following the recommended grooming frequencies tailored to your dog’s breed, you can ensure they stay healthy, happy, and looking their best.

  • A short story about a dog named Bingo – Part 5

A short story about a dog named Bingo – Part 5

It was a sunny day in May, and the park was filled with a festive atmosphere. The vibrant colors of the Maypole ribbons fluttered in the breeze, and laughter filled the air as families gathered for the annual Maypole dancing celebration.

Bingo and his newfound friends from the grooming salon were also in attendance. They had decided to organise a special surprise for everyone at the park – a dance of their own! They had practiced their moves diligently, wagging their tails in time to the music, and they were ready to show off their newly groomed fur and their newfound love for grooming.

As the lively music started to play, Bingo and his friends took their positions. Bingo, with his shiny fur and bright eyes, stood at the front of the group, ready to lead the way. His friends lined up behind him, their fur groomed to perfection, each with a unique style and charm, all created at the Absolutely Animals salon.

With a flick of the music conductor’s wand, the dogs began their dance. They weaved in and out, forming intricate patterns around the Maypole. Their steps were coordinated and graceful, their tails wagging in perfect synchrony.

The crowd at the park couldn’t believe their eyes. Children giggled with delight, and parents cheered and clapped as the dogs twirled and leaped with enthusiasm. It was a sight to behold, the dogs’ energy and joy spreading through the park like wildfire.

As the dance reached its crescendo, the dogs formed a circle around the Maypole, tails wagging furiously. They barked in unison, as if to say, “Look at us! We’ve discovered the joy of grooming, and we want to share it with everyone!”

The applause was thunderous, and the park erupted with cheers and laughter. Bingo and his friends couldn’t contain their excitement. They had not only discovered the pleasure of being groomed but had also brought happiness to others through their delightful dance.

After the performance, the dogs basked in the adoration of the crowd. They received pats on their well-groomed heads and belly rubs from children and adults alike. Their hearts swelled with pride as they realised the positive impact they had made.

From that day forward, the dogs became ambassadors for grooming and self-care in the community. They visited local schools and nursing homes, spreading their infectious joy and sharing their stories of transformation. Their Maypole dance became a legend, and every year during the Maypole dancing celebration, dogs of all shapes and sizes would gather to perform their own canine dance routine, inspired by Bingo and his friends.

And as for Bingo, he continued to cherish his newfound love for grooming. He always remained the scruffy little dog at heart, but now his fur was a testament to the joy and happiness he had discovered.
